Escape. Depending mood and head space, or time in your life, this word can evoke different emotions and conjure a variety of images. Maybe the end of your semester is near, and you yearn for vacation and release: the desire to disappear and run away, the need to unplug and shut off. Or perhaps you imagine quite the opposite: Lost in a maze. Stuck in a room, feeling boxed in, with the worst company. Frustrated in your own thoughts, wondering what to do next.

Escape on a daily basis for me is the obvious at the beach.   For this challenge however, my first thought of escape was take me away.   Our road trips are my ideal expression of escape as we drive with no agenda.

This week I am posting the Ole Hanson Beach Club in San Clemente.  

The Ole Hanson Beach Club dedicated in 1928, is the namesake of San Clemente’s founder.  The facility boasts two ocean views patios, an Olympic size pool, kitchen and event room, which can be rented for private parties and community events.  If you would like more information go here

 Travel Theme:

Beaches is right up my alley.  Some local beaches here in South Orange County.  The temperature was in the 90′s today and the water temperature was 67 degrees.  A great day at the beach today!

Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge: Pattern

Pattern. Patterns are everywhere. Patterns are sometimes intentional and sometimes accidental. They can be decorative or merely a result of repetition, and often patterns can be in the eye of the beholder to discover them. I find myself especially mesmerized by patterns in tiles when they’re colorful and beautiful. Thailand had plenty, and this photo has both a decorative pattern as well as the repeating elements surrounding the wat.

San Clemente surfer misses $50,000 Reward. 

  San Clemente surfer Greg Long was among five nominees for a wave he rode in Jaws off Maui in October.  The Ride of the Year Award was the highest payout and most coveted of the night.  It wasn’t announced until the end of the awards ceremony at City National Grove of Anaheim.  

Pro surfers, industry leaders in jeans and T-shirts walked around drinking beers while tanned model like women in evening dresses clutched their arms.  paparazzi flashes captured the surfer’s smiles.  During the ceremony videos of the surfers skimming down huge waves elicited oohs, ahs and cheers from the audience.

Though he didn’t get Ride of The Year, Long won the Surfline Best Performance Award,that came  with a $5,000 Award.  In a pre show interview Long brushed aside any competitive feelings among surfers. ” There’s no competition.  There’s so much respect and camaraderie among all of us, and we are all looking out for  each other,” Long said. “when you are out there surfing those are the farthest things from your mind.

  Long predicted Hawaiian surfer Shane Dorian would win the top prize for his run at Jaws one day before Long’s attempt, and he was right.  Shane Dorian wins Billabong XXL Award 2012 and the Pacific Tube Award.

    Santa Cruz surfer Shawn Dollar set a world record for the biggest wave for a swell he rode off the coast of california at Cortes Bank in December.  Dollar went home with the record recaptured and both the $20,000 Pacific Paddle Award and the $10,000 Billabong Big Wave Award under his belt.

I have never  appreciated the color Orange until I took up photography eight months ago.   I went through my library of photos and choose my favorite Orange photos.  I purchased the Orange bowl yesterday from East of the Sun, West of the Moon Thriftique Store .

My First Award

Culture. Culture is a bit of a loaded word. In a photograph, it can embody everything and nothing. So where do we draw the line? Shopping culture, hippy culture, Asian culture, Thai culture, ancient culture, and on and on. These phrases have different meanings. For me, as a working travel photographer, being able to show culture, in all of its various guises, is crucial to the success of an image.
